Présences. Ce mot résonne avec une sourde insistance au regard des créatures peintes par Laurent Fièvre. Les corps et les chairs manifestent une insistance parfois insoutenable. Présence d'autant plus forte qu'elle est conquise dans une époque où domine le régime de la transparence dématérialisée des images à tout-va. Si la peinture de Laurent Fièvre paraît comme une variation diabolique et infinie sur le thème du memento mori, elle questionne plus que jamais l’image de la mort que l’Occident impose à ses contemporains. L’absence de rituel et de codes iconiques, de bienséances pour encadrer la représentation de la mort enfant, par exemple. Celle-ci s’intègre en temps direct dans la prolifération des images de guerre, de migrants, sans la moindre retenue au nom d’un droit à l’information débridé.

A l’obscénité de ce nouveau régime d’images, Laurent Fièvre fait de sa peinture une lutte à mort contre l’utopie de la transparence et de la fausse présence des clichés numériques. De fait, la matière acquiert une place très importante dans ses créations. Redonner un corps et une chair à la peinture de la mort, c’est sa manière à lui de sauver son âme !

Laurent Fièvre renonce ainsi à la mystification de la profondeur picturale pour donner toute sa dignité à la peau même des motifs qu’il dessine. Il recourt pour cela à des papiers de soie, par exemple, afin d’obtenir un réalisme plus abouti de la peau. En véritable dermatologue de la peinture il se place ainsi au plus près de l’épiderme de ces créatures macabres dans une proximité troublante, qui évoque parfois le travail d’un médecin légiste ou celui du conservateur d’une léproserie géante.

Des filaments de corde lui permettent également de recréer certaines formes organiques naturelles au même titre que le plâtre et l'enduit rappellent la pierre. Parfois, au milieu de ces jeux de textures, l’artiste se plaît à incorporer des éléments insolites afin d’obtenir des effets de gaufrages inédits : tissus déchirés, circuits électroniques de téléphones portables, bijoux ou clous rouillés.

La force de la peinture de Laurent Fièvre tient sûrement à ce paradoxe qu’elle ne cesse de remettre sur son métier, le motif de la mort et de la maladie, tout en manifestant une puissance de vie picturale, et un grouillement matériologique qui aurait fait la joie de Dubuffet !

Qu’elles soient peintes ou dessinées, les figures de Laurent Fièvre s'imposent donc par leur intensité plastique. Rarement des figures de monstres n'avaient manifesté une telle ressemblance inquiétante et sournoise avec notre condition trop humaine. Dans notre temps où les questions d'identité travaillent nos subjectivités inquiètes, elles viennent ajouter leur joyeux trouble à la confusion des genres.

Des monstres! Des mâles, des femelles, des androgynes, des hybrides (mi-hommes, mi- bêtes), et des enfants. Des familles de monstres et autres bestioles, cyclopes ou acéphales, toutes ces progénitures menaçantes pourraient faire trembler la norme naturelle et les catégories de l'art! Du temps de l'opprobre nazie, elles auraient, sans doute, côtoyées des êtres «défigurés» de Picasso, de Masson ou de Klee!

De fait, les personnages peints par Laurent Fièvre sont, pour la plupart, victimes de malformations physiques et suscitent moins le rejet qu'un étrange mélange de sentiments contradictoires: répulsion et fascination, peur et pitié, interrogation et parfois amusement.

Avec son leitmotiv obsédant de figures macabres, rarement un peintre n’avait porté aussi loin la délectation esthétique éprouvée au spectacle de la cruauté. Pourtant loin de n’être qu’un exercice de voyeur impénitent ou d’apologie morbide, l’art de Laurent Fièvre participe bien plus à la joie du démembrement dionysiaque chère à la peinture de Francis Bacon ou à la dramaturgie beckettienne.

La création prend ici la forme d’une exploration des figures plurielles issues de l'engendrement d'un corps arraché à ce qu'Artaud nommait la matrice du Père-Mère, et dont le travail de découpe et de cruauté traverse les audaces picturales et les expérimentations textuelles d’artistes aussi différents que Bacon, Beckett ou Burroughs.

Ainsi la cruauté des peintures de Laurent Fièvre, avec son cortège de crânes, de mutilations, de prothèses, de fœtus chloroformés, de figures informes aux visages d’énucléés, et aux jambes arrachées, n’a rien à envier aux personnages beckettiens. Sans doute s’agit-il pour ces artistes du même désir éperdu de fuite, afin d’échapper à un corps enkysté dans des représentations subies, et auxquelles on ne peut qu’opposer la rage de l’expression. De même que l’itération des visages aux orbites vides renvoie au besoin farouche de s’arracher à l’engluement dans le regard de l’autre, le mutisme des personnages de Laurent Fièvre avec leur bouches cousues fait écho à la volonté de se défaire du carcan imposé de la langue.

Laurent Fièvre s'inscrit à sa manière dans une liste prestigieuse d'artistes travaillant à fissurer l’ordonnance des figures de la « normopathie » quotidienne, aussi bien dans le champ des arts plastiques que dans celui du sens et de l’écriture ; à travers certaines œuvres de la modernité : celles d’Artaud, de Beckett ou de Bacon. Une parenté méritée !
